What is Live Scan?
The Live Scan fingerprint system in use by the Rocklin Police Department is a fully integrated system designed for high reliability and true forensic quality fingerprint capture.

Does it use ink?
No. The system operates without the traditional ink and paper that previously had to be mailed in to the Department of Justice. There is no ink, no mess, and the quality of the prints submitted is known in advance, as the machine only accepts identifiable prints.

FingerprintingHow does it work?
The Live Scan system works by placing the hand of the applicant on a scanner, which captures a digital image of the fingerprints, and electronically transmits the impressions to the Department of Justice Databanks for criminal history check.

The system uses FBI accredited digital live scan camera technology to rapidly capture high quality fingerprints, regardless of stains on fingers from dyes, grease, or dirt, and overcomes dry and hard to print images with optional ridge enhancing silicone pads. It is the fastest, cleanest system in use today and works on a direct line transmission system to the Criminal History files at the state and federal levels.

How long does it take?
The results of the submitted prints are available in a matter of hours, as compared to the old system which took weeks.

Do you fingerprint children?
The Rocklin Police Department does not fingerprint children for child safety purposes. There is no law enforcement fingerprint database for children.

However, the Crime Prevention Unit has "Child Identification Kits" and fingerprint cards available for any citizen that would like to fingerprint their children.
