Residential Building Inspections

Once my building permit is issued, should I request inspections? Yes. The inspections that follow the issuance of the permit are provided to ensure that work completed on your project meets current building codes and standards.
How do I request an inspection?
You can request an inspection three ways, by phone voicemail system, fax, or online. Requests by 6:00 a.m., Monday-Friday (excluding holidays) will be eligible for inspections that same day. It is expected that all related work will be completed prior to requesting an inspection.
Schedule an inspection using the voicemail system:
- Call 916.625.5136
- Provide the following in this order:
- Date of Inspection Requested
- Building Permit Number
- Address and Lot Number
- Type of Inspection Requested
Request an inspection online: Fill out the Building Inspection Request Form online. Your request will be submitted to the building division. Building Inspection Request Online Form Request an inspection by fax: Fill out the building Inspection Request Form and fax to 916.625.5195.

If an inspection is requested prior to 6:00 a.m., am I guaranteed to get an inspection that same day? On rare occasions, the Building Division experiences an inspection overload and some inspections may not be done on the day requested. On these occasions, the inspectors will make an effort to contact the permittee to notify them that their inspection will be scheduled for the following business day. Can I request a specific time for my inspection? The Building Division will try to honor all requests for AM inspections, but may not be able to honor PM inspections.
If I have to cancel an inspection, how much notice do I need to give? For cancellations, please notify the Building Division, 916.625.5120, prior to 8:30 A.M. Inspections that are not ready or cancelled after 8:30 A.M. may be subject to a re-inspection fee.
Is there any information that I need to know prior to requesting an inspection?
The project address should be visible from the street. All approved plans and the inspection card should be available on the job site at the time of the inspection. Any changes or revisions to the approved plans needs to be reviewed and approved by the Building Division prior to further inspections. A person 18 years or older needs to be present for inspections inside a home or garage.
Do I need to do anything if no one will be home for an inspection that requires access into my backyard? Yes. If no one will be present for an inspection that requires access into the backyard, please download the Property Access Approval form. This form will need to be completed by the homeowner and posted on the front door or gate, the day of the inspection in addition to the approved set of plans and job card. Please note: All animals must be adequately confined or restrained.
If I have further questions, how can I get in touch with an inspector? If you would like to speak with a Building Inspector, please call 916.625.5120 Monday-Friday between 7:15AM and 7:45AM (excluding holidays).
