When new officers are hired by the Rocklin Police Department, they first must successfully complete the Field Training Program (FTP). The foundation of the training program is Field Training Officer (FTO). FTOs must have a minimum of three years of law enforcement patrol experience and must be highly proactive in their job related fields. Most of all, they must be good teachers and evaluators.
The FTP is a minimum of 10 weeks and is made up of four phases. These phases cover everything from city orientation to arrest procedures to firearm proficiency.
The FTOs are tasked to teach and/or evaluate the new officer and then complete daily observation reports. These reports are examined by the Field Training Supervisor and are used to ultimately evaluate the overall performance of the new officer before he/she is released from the Field Training Program.
The FTOs also train Community Services Officers (CSOs) and are also evaluated by daily observation reports. Daily observation reports are also completed for CSOs, but the length of the training period is usually two weeks.
